(Maricopa) Twelve Maricopa High School Junior Air Force ROTC cadets recently had an opportunity to participate in small aircraft flights sponsored by the Arizona Civil Air Patrol.  Starting on Thursday February 8th, three students participated in an orientation flight piloted by Civil Air Patrol pilot Mr. Jim Space. These flights were made possible through the efforts of Lt. Col. Allen Kirksey Junior Air Force ROTC Instructor at Maricopa High School.

Lt. Col. Kirksey commented, “I was invited to attend a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) / Air Force JROTC Coordination Meeting with a number of East Valley AFJROTC instructors.  As a result of this meeting, both the CAP and AFJROTC will provide orientation flights to cadets in order to motivate and stimulate the cadet’s interest in and knowledge of aviation and aerospace activities as part of its Air Force.  The program is voluntary and primarily motivational and should stimulate the cadet's interest in and knowledge of aviation and aerospace activities. AFJROTC has determined that the use of CAP services under the Air Force - CAP Cooperative Agreement to provide orientation flights to its cadets is in the best interest of the United States and an economical and efficient way to conduct this mission …. Cadets will be transported from MHS to Chandler Municipal Airport for their incentive flights where they will pre-brief and meet their CAP Pilot.  The flight time will be a total of 2 hours (1 hour flying around local area and landing at Ak-Chin Airport), cadets will be able to depart the aircraft, meet and greet family members then depart (1 hour flying around local area and land at Chandler Municipal Airport).”
