MARICOPA — Much like in the classroom, middle school basketball is mostly about teaching the fundamentals and discipline necessary to succeed at the next level. But it’s always nice to get a little glory along the way.

Maricopa Wells and San Tan Valley J.O. Combs middle schools met in the final of the Desert Middle School Athletic League playoffs on Monday to determine who would be entering high school as champions. Just like the two years before, the Panthers from Maricopa came out as the winner, completing their second consecutive undefeated season.

Led by 20 points from Frankie Carlyle and 11 from Kanye Young, Maricopa Wells jumped out to an early lead and never gave it up, eventually securing the trophy with a 66-52 final score.

The Combs Cougars continued to fight the whole game, particularly in the second half when they outscored the Panthers through a fast pace of play and strong skills. They got 17 points out of Quincy Cunningham and 14 from Isaac Guevara.

“Our guys were the underdogs all along,” said Combs coach Thomas Chavez. “(Maricopa Wells has) been scoring 80-plus points on every team. I’m very proud of my team, because they put in a lot of effort. There’s no doubt they have the heart.”

Winning three straight championships is a sign of the commitment everyone at the school from the administration down to the seventh-grade players has for the program, Wells coach G. Maeweather said. She has been working with the kids since they were in sixth grades, which gives her teams a great chance at succeeding every year.

“They know my expectations, to be students first and athletes second, and they work hard for me,” Maeweather said. “I think that’s why they’re special.”
