On June 3rd, cast members from the MHS Spring musical Beauty and the Beast attended the third annual Gammage High School Theatre Awards. Beauty and the Beast was adjudicated for recognition during its run in April, and several student actors were nominated in categories including Best Lead, Best Supporting Actor, Outstanding Dancer, and Outstanding Vocalist.
19 schools participated in the event, each showcasing a three-minute segment of their respective shows. MHS students performed "Something There" from Act 2 of the show.
The first award of the night given was Best Supporting Actor, which went to recent MHS graduate Nikolas Mase, who beat out a field of around 40 students from all over Arizona. Mase played Lumiere.
A few awards later, recent graduate Carlos O. Venegas, who portrayed the Beast, was selected as Outstanding Vocalist - again winning against strong competition with over
40 students in the category. Both Mase and Venegas are pursuing musical theatre degrees.
This was MHS Theatre Company's first time participating in the Gammage Awards (a regional program for the National Competition and Broadway's Jimmy Awards). I am so proud of my students - and I can't wait to see what they accomplish next.
